Setting Digital Marketing Goals to Achieve Success in 2021

Setting Digital Marketing Goals to Achieve Success in 2021

It’s finally here. We’ve made it 2021. With the rush of the holiday season and a goal just to make it to the end of 2020, we’ve found a few clients realizing it’s time to set new years goals. While you may have already set some overarching goals, we wanted to help you specifically set your digital marketing goals.

Digital marketing goals can and should be a part of your overarching goals, but they’re also a strategy to help you meet them as well. When you consider your digital marketing goals specifically, you can dream big and think outside the box. There are a lot of opportunities with digital marketing you aren’t given with traditional marketing.

Here’s how you can set digital marketing goals for 2021:

Look at Last Years Metrics

While we all know that 2020 was a year like any other, it’s important to look back on your metrics and see how your website and any digital marketing tactics you did perform.
For your website, you should look at things like:

  • Website traffic
  • Bounce rate
  • Traffic Sources
  • Time Spent on Site

These are just a few examples of website options, but you can look at your organic SEO rankings, as well as PPC results if you did AdWords like CPC, Conversion Rates, and Clicks. If you’re unsure what these mean, check out our glossary of terms or reach out to our team with any questions you have. The initial four we shared some of the most important and will help guide the rest of your goals, so having a strong understanding of them is crucial.

Consider Your Overarching Goals

As we mentioned, your digital marketing goals should be a part of your overarching goals. Are you looking to add a new service to your business? Then a digital marketing goal could be to create a landing page dedicated to the service, as well as write some blogs about it to boost organic SEO, and implement a PPC campaign.

If one of your overarching goals is to grow your business, then you can get a bit more creative with your digital marketing goals. You can grow your traffic with a pay-per-click or social media campaign, then implement a content strategy to help build up your business.

Your digital marketing goals can be both part of your overarching goals as well as strategies to reach them. Consider them a tool to help your business.

Ask yourself, how will I reach those goals?

When we talk about goals, we always say you need to make sure they’re SMART goals. That means specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. When writing your digital marketing goals, think about how you will reach them; do you need to have someone write a piece of content every week? Do you need to hire an agency? Do you need to update your website? Before deciding on a goal to go after, make sure you know what it’ll take to reach those goals and how you need to include that in your year of planning. If at the core of your issues, you need to redo your website, it’s important that you set aside a budget to be able to accomplish this.

Along with financial resources, it’s also important to consider the time dedication required to achieving your goals. If you’re having someone write a new piece of content each week, who will it be? How will you assign it? How will they track their time? When you’re able to plan these ahead of time, you’re more likely to achieve your goals.

Examples of Digital Marketing Goals

If you’re not sure exactly sure what type of digital marketing goals you could be going for, here’s a few examples you could consider:

  • Decrease Cost per Acquisition
  • Increase Time Spent on Site
  • Increase Website Traffic
  • Increase Sales (if eCommerce)
  • Increase Organic Traffic from Social

Each of these is truly dependent on your overarching business goals. Are you planning to expand your business? Maybe you’re looking to expand your services or just increase engagement with your current customers. These goals can help grow your business when planned strategically.

If you’re looking for some help with your digital marketing goals, consider reaching out to an agency. At efelle, we take a prescriptive approach with our clients, working with them to help reach their goals. Find an agency you feel comfortable with their skillset and tell them your overarching goals, from there, they can help you decide on both a short and longterm plan that will help you.

At efelle, we’ve worked with clients who want to organically increase their SEO rankings so we create a long term strategy to build that every month, while also helping them fill their funnel with pay per click marketing. Other clients need to begin with their website and we work with them to first optimize the site itself before moving on to the next steps.

Whatever you choose to do, we wish you the best of luck in 2021 and cheers to it not being 2020 at least.
