Want to know what works? Ask the competition.

Successful web marketing means staying on top of what’s working right now. By understanding strategies that work best, you can begin to tap into a new way of working. A recent survey of web consultants, SEO managers, marketers and business owners shows exactly what works best for their marketing campaigns. The most successful tactics include a mix of link building strategies, but the survey also shows us which tactics have the strongest tendencies to backfire.

Top Marketing Strategies

The survey from content creation company Skyrocket matters because the success of a website depends largely upon the success of competing websites. Trends in link building strategies show what your competitors are likely doing to promote their websites. To beat the competition, you’ll need to adopt similar or better strategies.

Bigger Budgets

So, what are the trends in web marketing this year? Well, among the survey respondents, Skyrocket found a tendency for businesses to worry about link building as a marketing strategy driven by changes to Google’s algorithm that harmed the rank of many websites. Nonetheless, more than a third (37 percent) of respondents invested $10k to $50k per month in link building strategies, up a tremendous 27 percent over last year’s survey. Another 23 percent spent $5k to $10, 20 percent spent $1k to $5 k and 20 percent spent no money or as much as $1k. An overwhelming 73 percent of respondents said they expect to increase their link building spend even more next year.

Greater Focus on Content and Outreach

The survey breaks down link-building strategies by popularity among the respondents. Listed in order of most commonly used, here are the strategies the survey respondents used most:

  • Content with outreach
  • Infographic promotion
  • Guest posts
  • Resource pages
  • Broken link building
  • Local business directories and citations
  • Resource pages
  • Pain links
  • Translating existing content
  • Competitions and giveaways
  • Video submissions
  • Press release submissions
  • Blog networks
  • Guest posting

Approaches to Avoid

Interestingly, the reality doesn’t seem to match the perception. When asked for feedback on the approaches they found to be ineffective, respondents listed the following strategies, listed in order of the most votes. Compare this list to the one above. Clearly, many websites focus on tactics that others believe just don’t work:

  • Article directories
  • Social bookmarking
  • Forum profile links
  • Web directories
  • Comments
  • Link wheels
  • Rented links
  • Press release submissions
  • Blog networks
  • Infographic directory submissions
  • Paid links
  • Guest posting
  • Resource pages
  • Video submissions
  • Infographic promotion

And, when asked about strategies that hurt web ranking, respondents voted for the following:

  • Paid links
  • Article directories
  • Web directories
  • Forum profile links
  • Link wheels
  • Rented links
  • Blog networks
  • Comments
  • Guest posts
  • Social bookmarking
  • Broken link building
