Make a cheat-sheet or listicle

A great blog is relevant and offers practical tips and information. Sometimes, that information can come in the form of an article—but sometimes, it’s refreshing to just get bullet points or ideas listed simply and with intent.

Sure, “listicles” get a bad reputation (largely from overuse), but listing out steps or need-to-know tidbits about an industry-specific term, concept, or event can be a simple way to both demonstrate your authority on the subject and give your readers something informative and useful.

Try drafting a cheat sheet, list, or primer on a particular concept or item—like a onesheet for something in your industry—and gauge the response. You might be surprised how useful such a basic explainer can be!

Follow up on an older idea.

If you blogged about a story or event last year, try revisiting it this year. What’s changed? What have you learned? How is this particular instance or idea still impacting the world?

With this exercise, don’t simply rehash your last article—instead, try to really offer a salient reflection.

Tell a story.

When a news event or story strikes you on a personal level, don’t be afraid to share why. Writing about student debt? Talk about how you, yourself, paid for college. Sharing tips for getting into an industry? Elaborate on what you wish you’d known as a young person—and who gave you the best advice. Personal stories can be an extremely compelling way relate information.

Or, you can also tell the story of a client or success in your field (with the permission of all parties involved, that is). Sharing the process you went through can illuminate your process for potential clients while letting them imagine what it may be like for them to work with you.

Blogging can feel like a strain on your brain, especially if you’re constantly trying to re-create content that you’ve already exhausted. Instead of struggling to craft more of the same, try a new style or idea to break out of your patterns and explore a different kind of writing.
