Top Touchdown Plays That Will Help You Score Big on Your Mobile Conversions

What do touchdowns and mobile conversions have in common you ask? Plenty!

The 2015 NFL season is already underway and there is no time like the present to get those game winning mobile conversion plays underway.

But as visions of hail marys, interceptions and 95-yard runbacks dance in our heads, brands have to focus on their mobile game strategies for a serious chance at converting mobile users into mobile regulars and new customers.

Why?

The mobile web experience is advancing and growing by leaps and bounds offering incredible opportunities for those that are on top of their game.

Whether your mobile users find you by directly typing your URL or through mobile-searches, here are the top game winning plays that will optimize your page performance.

Load Action

Like the clean pattern of a “Fly Route” in football where the receiver runs straight up-field toward the end zone as fast as he can, you want your mobile pages to do the same. Your user interface should be clean, straightforward and most importantly, fast loading. This is one of the major frustrations users experience with the mobile web today. Even with 4G networks, mobile page download speeds on many websites are still slower than molasses. Mobile users become quickly disgusted with a site when they have to wait for 15, 30 or even 60 second page load times.

Brand Recognition

Everybody knows or at least recognizes who the “Dallas Cowboys” are; even people who aren’t diehard football fans can identify with either their name or the star in their logo. Why? Because they are highly visual and one of the most publicized and talked about football teams in history, and with your brand, the simple act of consistently communicating and displaying the look and uniformity of your site along with your brand name and logo, is a great strategy that will even have Tony Romo sitting up and taking notice.

Minimal Navigation

They say sometimes less is more, take for instance the “Hail Mary Pass.” In 2007, Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner threw a 48-yard “Hail Mary” pass to Larry Fitzgerald at the end of the first half of the game to take the lead against the shocked San Francisco 49ers. A simple, clear-cut strategy is more often than not the most successful strategy and keeping your navigation to a minimum, just your logo and 3 to 5 important links, will make it easier and faster for mobile users to get to where they want to go. Implementing this minimal approach will make for happy users which will mean returning users.

Clear Calls-to-action

An experienced quarterback will often call an audible, which is a call to change the play at the line of scrimmage just prior to snapping the ball. It is important for the quarterback to make the calls short, clear and concise so there is no confusion. The same principal goes for calls-to-action, they should be well-thought-out and well-designed, contain copy that makes you want to act immediately and have a clear value proposition. Your users want to know, need to know, “How to Act Now” or “How to Call” your business, and they want it in an easy to find and click manner.

Bad Banners:

We’ve all seen them, the fanatical fans with their huge banners that say things like, “Deflators – Gonna Deflate” and “They call me Tony Turnover and Romoception”, but while they are good for a few belly laughs, they can also get annoying. Irritating pop-up banners on mobile devices are one of the biggest conversion rate killers a mobile site can have. Not only are they difficult to skip, but they interrupt the thought process of a potential client or customer, leaving them frustrated and with a bad taste in their mouth. The mobile experience should be as fast and streamlined as possible and any additional unnecessary clicks or disruptions can lower a site’s conversion rate and dramatically increase their drop-off rate.

We are rapidly approaching a point in time where mobile conversions will tackle desktop conversions. So, if you insist on making the same old plays over and over again while watching your conversion rates get sacked, then get accustomed to your losing streak. If, on the other hand, you focus on a game-winning mobile strategy, conversion rates and quite possibly the Super Bowl will follow.
